Week of January 24th EIPT

This weeks assignments have been very interesting.  The TIME article was empowering to me.  Because even with the invention of the web, without you and me the web wouldn't have become the great virtual community that it is today.

The definition of community has expanded as well.  Community in itself is a group of people in a localized geographical area, like a neighborhood.

In Dr. Ge's Power Point Presentation she stated Rheingold came up with the term virtual community.  This form of community has no geographical boundaries.  Facebook and My Space are examples of this.

The term virtual learning community goes a step further.  It is a virtual community that has a group of members that share a concern or issue like a support group.  It's a place to share experiences or discuss issues on a particular topic.

The virtual community is endless.  From online shopping to social networks to games where you play against someone in another country.  It's exciting to be a part of this technology.  It is growing so fast, though it is hard for the legal issues to keep up.  Privacy issues, people selling stuff illegally, hackers, identity theft and more are all problems that have brought new legal issues to light bringing more laws guiding its use.

I think this class is going to be quite informative and will help me develop better skills in working with the computer.  I look forward to a great semester.

  1. You point out the main things about the internet that I don't like, privacy issues, illegal selling, hackersand identity theft. I think if we had better control of these issues I would be a much bigger fan of the internet. I love the internet for my online shopping, research, keeping up-to-date on current issues, and using it to help me with my kids' homework. I like your line, "without you and me the web wouldn't be what it is today" - the virtual community. Nice job. I enjoyed reading your blog.

  2. You bring up very good points. I love the ease of on-line shopping and getting information quickly. I do not like the way the Internet has invaded my privacy. I do not Facebook or twitter, but I can google my name and find out several things about myself I would prefer to keep private. I understand that with the convenience of the Internet there must be some costs, but at what point can we stop the invasion or can we?
