EIPT BLOG WEEK OF MARCH 20-25

Spring break last week was a very welcome sight.  Even though I still studied, the stress was not as bad.  Working on The Case Study was interesting.  I chose Facebook and Nurse.com.  It is amazing to me that such a young man has expanded technology as much as he has with his social network.  I found out there are over 600 million active users on Facebook (Facebook, 2010).  The virtual learning community I chose was Nurse.com.  I chose this sight because 1) I am a nurse and 2) I wanted to find a site that had nursing education.  I did a lot of searching and this website appealed to me the most. At first I found it difficult to figure out where to start searching through the sight.  Then once I got started I enjoyed browsing and posting in the introduction forum.  I plan on continuing to use the sight even if I am just a lurker for awhile.
Our on-line synchronous meeting was quite interesting.  I think the project is going to be interesting but everyone became overwhelmed during the discussion.  Personally I had decided that getting an “A” was not as important as just getting through the class.  Now, that at least this next weeks’ assignments are not quite as intense I feel a little better.  Thank you Dr. Ge!
I really do look forward to working together with Janine on the project.  She and I work well together and I really feel the project will be beneficial to where we adjunct.

  1. Suzanne, I am really interested too in the nurse.com site you mentioned. I think I will log into the site and lurk a little too! I look forward to working with you on the upcoming project. I noticed you mentioned that everyone seemed to be overwhelmed during the on-line synchronous meeting. I didn't get to attend but I certainly am feeling the pressure too! Oh, also, I like how you've updated the colors and stuff on this blog - it's really cool!

  2. Suzanne,
I am a member of both of the sites you mentioned. I really like Facebook for keeping in touch with my family, sharing pictures, and reconnecting with old friends. I think it is a great tool for sharing knowledge as well; you can post videos, articles, links, and raise awareness on your page. For example, my sister was participating in local walk to raise money for the rheumatoid arthritis foundation (which she has had since age 16), so friends and family were able to donate money to the cause through a link on her post.
I use nurse.com quite often for advice via the forums. For example, when studying for my CCRN, I went into the critical care nurse forum and found threads with advice on how and what to study and when we were moving to MS, I went into the MS State forum for advice from nurses in the area on what hospitals to apply at and general information. I have been using it again pretty frequently since I will graduate in August and have been roaming around the Staff Development and Nurse Educator forums. Nurses at this site have helped and supported me tremendously over the past several years.
    Thanks for sharing!
    Karin
